How to lock your bike

STEP 1.

First of all find suitable parking. Use bike hoops or other secure pavement furniture in well lit areas which can be easily seen by passers by and any CCTV in the area.

To deter a bike thief the best defence is a good quality lock. To find out more see our how to buy a lock guide.

STEP 2.

The next step is to remove any accessories from their brackets such as lights and cycle computers.

You may consider removing the saddle if it has a quick release bracket, or use a saddle cover for protection.

STEP 3.

Be sure to lock all of your bike, including the wheels. Most wheels have quick release skewers which can be replaced by locking skewers for better protection.

Alternately use a second lock or an extension cable (pictured) and secure it using your main lock. Make sure the lock passes through the frame of your bike and through the bike hoop you are locking it to.

STEP 4.

Double check your bike is secure and properly locked. If you are leaving your bike outside overnight then consider covering it with a bike cover. This will help protect it from the elements and also keep it out of the sight of prying eyes.

Consider taking a picture of the bike. This could serve as a reminder of where it is parked.
